Sociology is the scientific study of social change and social life – by seeking to explain how human groups, institutions, and social movements shape our lives. Sociology develops students' insights into theoretical and practical aspects of life. Students at SIUC study such topics as criminology, delinquency, deviance, identity, international development, marriage and the family, race/ethnic relations, religion, sex and gender roles, sexuality, social problems, social movements, social thought, social change, sports/leisure, and victimology.

DRAs! Kristie Lipford and Muhammed Asadi, doctoral candidates, are recipients of the Dissertation Research Award beginning Fall 2011. The DRA is a competitive university-wide academic award for the final stage of dissertation. Kristie's dissertation examines the effect of politico-racial ideology on Caribbean and African American morbidity. Muhammed Asadi's dissertation looks at the structure of global militarization and its effects on economic development and social stratification on a world systemic level.

Excellent New Scholars! Kristen and Kelsy are new Assistant Professors in Sociology, beginning Fall 2011. Kristen received her Ph.D. in Sociology, University of Southern California, May 2011. Her areas of specialization are sex and gender, work and occupations, social inequality sociology of the body and qualitative methods. Kelsy received her Ph.D. in Sociology, University of California, Irvine, 2010. Her areas of specialization are social movements, gender inequality, organization, research methods, political sociology, and social problems.

20 YEARS! Both Tammy and Sue observed working 20 years at SIUC in 2011. Tammy is Sociology's assistant to the graduate and undergraduate programs and began her duties in Sociology January 2011. Sue is Sociology's assistant to the Department Chair and has worked in the Sociology Department for all 20 years. Thanks to both for their great work ethics, commitment, dedication, and many years of excellent service to the University!
